─────────────────────────────────┤ ACTORS ├───────────────────────────────────
└────────┘
The following list catalogs EVERY actor or actress who has ever received
screen credit in an episode or film of "Star Trek." The listings are not
necessarily in chronological order (you can check that for yourself by checking
them against the episode guides, however); first off, the appearances are listed
by series, then by role. Sometimes, particularly in Classic Trek, certain
actors appeared as different characters intermittently, but rather than
stumbling around chronological order, their appearances in each character are
listed. In a few cases, such as Mark Lenard, Michael Dorn and W. Morgan
Sheppard, things really get crazy as to which appearance in which role came
first on which show. This file simply lists each actor's appearances. The
episode numbers have now been replaced by episode titles for those who, like
myself, think of Trek episodes by name and not by number; this was a monumental
task of retyping - so please let me know if I muffed it anywhere!

Some episodes of Classic Trek have been omitted because they did not credit
a specific composer for their scores; this is due mainly to the original show's
frequent recycling of music. Whenever one composer's work - even if lifted
from the scores of previous episodes - comprised the bulk of an episode's score,
that composer received the credit. In the second and third seasons of Classic
Trek, various bits of music from numerous composers were used, and it thus
became impossible to credit any one or two people, so the score composer was
simply not credited (which probably would not happen today due to Hollyood union
stipulations). The "uncredited" scores are listed below.
For the record, "Next Generation" and "Deep Space Nine" also recycle music.
One easily recognizable passage from music is by Dennis McCarthy, first heard in
fifth season's "Conundrum." The same short synthesizer phrase is also heard in
"Cause and Effect" as Dr. Crusher trims the flowers in her cabin, and again in
sixth season's "Man of the People" as Troi does a solo workout under the psychic
influence. As for "Deep Space Nine," it's more a question of constant
restatement of the same style. In "Captive Pursuits" during the phaser battle,
a quick phrase is heard which can also be heard in McCarthy's "Yesterday's
Enterprise" score (track #5, "Skin of Teeth," in case you have the CD and happen
to care). And, of course, Jay Chattaway always seems to sound the same no
matter how hard he tries (though none of his Trek scores have been released to
the public, that same style can be heard - with some far more interesting
variations - on the soundtrack from the PBS series "Space Age" on Narada Cinema
CDs). Due to the fact that there are now several hours of McCarthy and
Chattaway scores on tape at Paramount, the music editors can pick snippets of
previous soundtracks and put them into any episode where appropriate, which has
given McCarthy and Chattaway time to work up different material for "Deep Space
Nine" this season (well, McCarthy, anyway). It also allows the editors to use
music from one composer only, which is why "Next Generation" and "Deep Space
Nine" have yet to *not* credit a composer for any episode.
The handful of Classic Trek episodes for which there are no music credits
are:
TOS "The Gamesters of Triskelion," "A Piece of the Action," "The Omega
Glory," "Bread and Circuses," "Assignment: Earth"

────────────────────┤ NEXT GENERATION STORY CHANGES ├────────────────────────
└────────────────────────────────┘
Most fans of the original "Star Trek" are familiar already with some of the
changes made, during development, to episodes of that series, such as the major
alterations in "City on the Edge of Forever," to name just one instance. "The
Next Generation" is no exception to the inevitable rule that television scripts
will be rewritten.
Most of this information is gathered from convention panels and the excellent
yearly issue of Cinefantastique that features a large article devoted to the
making of the latest season of "The Next Generation."
01 ENCOUNTER AT FARPOINT
In Gene Roddenberry's original character sketches for the main characters,
many differences were made in the characters' names, but very few changes in
actual character were made. Picard started life on the page as Julien
Picard (instead of Jean-Luc); Riker's name was spelled "Ryker;" Beverly
Crusher was originally planned to have a teenage daughter named Leslie
(there were *some* major changes, obviously!); the sometimes insecure Tasha
Yar was originally going to be a ruthlessly efficient fighter named, at
first, "Macha" Hernandez, then Tanya, and finally, Tasha Yar; Troi was
originally telepathic as well as empathic (an ability which was seen in
"Farpoint" but removed thereafter). Geordi and Dr. Crusher survived largely
unchanged (though one of Geordi's original duties was to be a part-time
teacher), and Lt. Worf was not even in the original draft of "The Next
Generation." Other than these mostly superficial changes (just tell Wesley
Crusher that!), the story itself was not altered significantly from what we
saw.
14 11001001
Originally titled "Unconditional Return." According to Ian Justman, 11001001
is the unconditional return command in binary. Now that's clever - how much
ya wanna bet Okuda thought of that one? (Thanks, Ian!)
18 COMING OF AGE
A scene was actually filmed for this episode but ended up on the cutting
room floor due to time constraints. Wesley was to have celebrated his 16th
birthday accompanied by his mother and the rest of the main crew, presenting
him with a cake in the shape of a Starfleet insignia (photos of this scene
have been available since the episode was filmed).
20 THE ARSENAL OF FREEDOM
In the first draft of the story, it was Picard who was injured when he and
Dr. Crusher fell into the underground control room on Minos, and without the
aid of the Enterprise's medical equipment, Picard began to die. Crusher, at
this point, was to reveal her true feelings for Picard. Gene Roddenberry
vetoed this subplot, deciding against any romantic entanglements between the
main characters, which is also a primary reason the series rarely, if ever,
follows up on the past relationship of Troi and Riker.
22 SKIN OF EVIL
Though no one has ever said what the story would have been about had Tasha
Yar not been killed off in "Skin of Evil," it is known that this episode
was rewritten extensively to accomodate Denise Crosby's exit from "The Next
Generation," to the point that whatever the major plot of the story was, it
took a back seat to Yar's death and the crew's coping with the loss. Also,
the episode's original title was "The Shroud."
23 WE'LL ALWAYS HAVE PARIS
Picard, in the initial draft of this story, would have ended up rekindling
not only his friendship with Janice Manheim, but their physical relationship
as well. Roddenberry ordered a rewrite, not only because he wanted to avoid
as many romances as possible in the first season, but because Janice was
already married to someone else!
24 CONSPIRACY
According to Tracy Torme', "Conspiracy" started life as a story about an
actual conspiracy within Starfleet's highest ranks with no alien influence
whatsoever - an idea which Gene Roddenberry's vision of a less corrupt human
race automatically nixed. (The officers' reason for rebelling against the
Starfleet top brass was due to the Prime Directive restricting too many of
their command options.) Torme' also commented that the alien being exposed
in Commander Remmick's corpse was not his idea, but rather written in to
quickly reveal the "queen bee" and leave room for the closing scene.
25 THE NEUTRAL ZONE
Though it's still obviously a part of the Borg plotline, "The Neutral Zone"
was originally intended by producer Maurice Hurley to serve as part one of a
trilogy. This first part did what it was supposed to do - re-introduced the
Romulans to the Trek universe and showed that the Romulans and Federation
apparently had a problem that was bigger than either could deal with on
their own. Part two of the trilogy would show the Borg themselves (as "Q
Who" did, though it was later designed to be part of a two-story arc of its
own involving Q), and the third story would ally, at long last, the Romulans
and the Federation, to defeat the Borg together and begin to work for a
lasting piece afterward.
Though the Borg have been expanded upon in other ways, Hurley's three
story concept would make for a very interesting arc - and possibly even a
very satisfying conclusion to the series itself...or a motion picture.
26 THE CHILD
Since this episode was created for the mid-70s revival of Trek Classic that
never came about, there are plenty of changes to talk about, but, like
"Farpoint," most of them are no more than superficial. To get an idea of
Classic Trek's "Child," substitue Commander Decker for Riker, Lt. Ilia for
Troi, and the Vulcan science officer Xon for Data, and you have much the
same story, with the notable omission of the lingering remnants of the
Riker-Troi relationship, which, in Roddenberry's concept for the second
series of Classic Trek adventures, was definitely not present between Ilia
and Decker (though a relationship had obviously existed by the time those
characters reached the big screen in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture").
28 ELEMENTARY, DEAR DATA
Many fans wonder about this episode's contradictory premise - that holodeck
matter cannot leave the holodeck, a fact stated one or two acts after Data
walks out of the holodeck carrying Moriarty's drawing of the Enterprise!
The story's original ending would have cleared that confusion up. Picard,
as he did in the final version, convinced Moriarty to release the Enterprise
back to the crew's control and give up his quest to leave the holodeck.
After Moriarty relinquished the ship to Picard and disappeared, Picard then
told Pulaski that Moriarty actually could have left the holodeck anytime he
wished, but Picard wanted to confine the potentially dangerous fictional
villain to the holodeck. Roddenberry vetoed this idea hands down, refusing
to allow any depiction of the Enterprise's commanding officer as deceitful
for any reason.
31 THE SCHIZOID MAN
This episode's final draft was culled from two scripts, "Core Dump" by Hans
Manning and Richard Beimler, and "Menage" by Tracy Torme'. "Core Dump"
originated the idea of dying scientist Ira Graves attempting to use Data as
a new body for his still-potent mind, while "Menage" contributed the idea of
Data's personality conflicting internally as the result of the memories of
the colonists on Data's home planet surfacing in Data's conscious mind - an
idea later touched upon, though in quite a different way, in "Silicon
Avatar." The two stories were combined to make "The Schizoid Man," which
was eventually rewritten itself on the producers' instructions, resulting in
a story Torme' was not pleased with. The original ending was removed as well
- following up on the "beard" scene in the teaser, a scene on the bridge in
which Picard and Riker argue whether or not Data now looks more dignified as
a result of the android's latest attempt to seem more human. The camera, in
the omitted final scene, pans over to Data, who has shaved his head!
34 THE MEASURE OF A MAN
A scene deleted from this episode takes place at the computer terminal where
Riker prepares for his duty as Data's prosecutor. On the screen Riker is
viewing, a schematic of Lore is shown, but the deleted scene picked up from
that point, showing Riker watching a computer animation of a close-up view
of Lore's head, which "exploded" to show him a cross-section of the circuits
within. The scene was removed because it was "too graphic," but is now seen
occasionally at conventions. Writer Melinda Snodgrass also originally
wanted, instead of the poker game, a scene in which Wesley and Geordi try to
show Data how to swim, but budgetary constraints resulted in the poker game
in Riker's quarters, now an often-used tradition in the series!
37 THE ROYALE
A major change was made to this story, resulting in writer Tracy Torme'
taking his name off the credits and using a pseudonym instead. The 21st
century Earth astronaut - seen in the filmed version only as a rotting
corpse - was originally kept alive by the aliens so he could enjoy their
recreation of what they thought was the astronaut's society. Torme' says
that the astronaut, in the original story's final scene, would have remained
on the planet in the Hotel Royale, though he knew it was a fictional
creation. The producers insisted that the poignant role of the astronaut
was, in Torme's words, "too good a part for a guest star," and Torme' was
forced to split the dialogue of the character between Riker and Picard.
Torme' removed his name and used the pen-name "Keith Mills."
38 TIME SQUARED
As noted previously, "The Neutral Zone" was originally intended to be the
first of three stories restoring the Romulan-Federation conflict to "The
Next Generation," introducing the Borg, and showing the Federation and the
Romulan Empire working together peacefully at last to defeat the Borg. This
trilogy was not permitted by Gene Roddenberry, who early on decided against
major story arcs involving a number of episodes. Writer Maurice Hurley
tried again with this episode to wave a plot thread through two episodes,
but was again voted down. In this episode's original conclusion, Q was to
have appeared after the Enterprise escaped from the energy vortex and told
Picard he wanted to join the crew, leading into "Q Who." Also, the episode
was originally titled "Time to the Second."
40 PEN PALS
According to writer Melinda Snodgrass, a major focus of this story was left
out for an unusual reason. The original script for "Pen Pals" would have
investigated Data's discovery of touch as a communication of friendship and
security, but the idea couldn't be filmed as such since Brent Spiner's gold
makeup and the darker bronze makeup of guest star Nikki Cox as the alien
girl Sarjenka smeared, without fail, onto the hands of the other actor!
43 UP THE LONG LADDER
Originally titled "Send In the Clones."
48 EVOLUTION
Another scene focusing on Wesley was, like the birthday party in "Coming of
Age," actually filmed but later omitted. Writer/producer Michael Piller had
written a five-minute scene involving Wesley and his girlfriend in Ten
Forward (reduced a quick cutaway in the episode's final scene when Guinan
remarks about the "cute couple" to Dr. Crusher), and it was shot, but left
out due to the time limit. It has also been said that many early third
season scripts were ready to go...for Dr. Pulaski, which meant heavy
rewriting. An example of this shortly.
49 THE ENSIGNS OF COMMAND
Writer Melinda Snodgrass says that her original concept for this episode had
more to do with Data's learning the elusive art of command presence, but it
was edged out by scenes involving Picard trying to negotiate with the
approaching alien colonists.
51 WHO WATCHES THE WATCHERS?
This story is an example of the changes necessitated by Dr. Crusher's return
to the series. In "Pen Pals" in the second season, Dr. Pulaski performed a
memory-wipe on the alien girl Sarjenka. Since most of the early third season
stories were written with the idea that Pulaski was on board the Enterprise
to stay, that concept was followed up here with the failed memory-wipe on
Liko which resulted in the contamination of his society. With Crusher's
return, the script was mostly left alone, but altered in an interesting way
by having Dr. Crusher say she was aware of Pulaski's memory-wipe technique -
whereas the original script would have had Picard ordering Pulaski to erase
the memory of the Away Team from Liko's mind, and reminding Pulaski that she
had performed the procedure before.
52 THE BONDING
Rather than young Jeremy Aster's dealing with an alien replica of his late
mother, the boy was originally to have recreated her in the holodeck in
Ronald Moore's first draft script, showing the potential dangers of sinking
too far into fantasy (a theme not unlike that of "Hollow Pursuits" later in
the same season). The producers, wanting to focus more on aliens and less
on the holodeck, ordered a rewrite.
53 BOOBY TRAP
In the original concept of "Booby Trap," Picard was the one talking to Leah
Brahms and trying to solve the ship's dilemma, rather than Geordi. Producer
Michael Piller decided it would make more sense for Geordi to be the one
trying to repair the ship in time to escape.
55 THE PRICE
Another scene actually filmed but cut out involved Counselor Troi advising
Chief O' Brien on his relationship with his girlfriend, who wanted him to
marry her, though O' Brien was unsure of making that commitment. A full
year before "Data's Day" introduced the character of Keiko, this deleted
scene gave named O' Brien's girlfriend as Mitzi.
57 THE DEFECTOR
Ronald Moore's first draft of this story was concerned with a relationship
developing between the injured Romulan defector and Dr. Crusher, but the
episode's focus was later centered on the political ramifications of the
defector and his vital information. Also, the scenes in the teaser of "The
Defector" were originally to have been another Sherlock Holmes holodeck
mystery with Picard and Data, but due to Paramount experiencing legal
entanglements with the estate of Arthur Conan Doyle, Shakespeare's "King
Henry V" was the holodeck scenario instead.
62 YESTERDAY'S ENTERPRISE
Originally submitted as a spec script, this story's first draft resembled
the finished episode in one way only - a ship from the past slipping into
the future and altering history. In development, the alternate history
became an ongoing war with the Klingons, and the other ship became the
Enterprise-C. The existence of Tasha Yar on the "alternate" Enterprise-D
was the last refinement made to the story. Ronald Moore, who brushed up the
script, also says that time and budgetary limits deprived the audience of a
chance to see the Enterprise-D's bridge crew dying horrible deaths! Wesley
Crusher's head would have been sheared off by flying debris and Data would
have been electrocuted, but the only hint left in the finished episode was
Riker's throat being cut by debris. Contrary to numerous fan rumors, writer
Ronald D. Moore insists that "Yesterday's Enterprise" NEVER had anything to
do with the Enterprise-A, the Enterprise-no-bloody-A-B-C-or-D, or Captain
Kirk and crew visiting the 24th century.
68 HOLLOW PURSUITS
According to Sarah Higley (a college English professor who uses "Sally
Caves" as a pseudonym for all her non-academic material), Barclay started
out with more of a malicious edge than shy nervousness, and some of the
first draft dealt more with what Barclay created on the holodeck than the
final version did.
70 SAREK
The first draft of this story didn't deal with telepathic projections of
negative emotions, nor did it show the return of Ambassador Sarek; rather,
it was simply an allegory to Alzheimer's disease as an aging ambassador had
difficulties preparing for his final duty to the Federation. The next layer
added to the story was the emotional-projection plot, and finally it was
decided to use Sarek as the ambassador in question.
73 THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
This story's original draft has potentially the most differences from its
final draft than any other episode. Writer Michael Piller's first script
featured the Borg kidnapping Picard AND Data - and since Data was the key to
the resolution of this story, that would have left the Enterprise crew in
even worse trouble had the final scene shown Picard and Data both under the
power of the Borg! This idea, however, was ejected early on, as it was
decided that Data is probably considered obsolete by the Borg (a point made
clearly in part two), so they wouldn't really have a good reason to kidnap
him as well.
Also, in the Starlog "Makeup FX Journal," makeup supervisor Michael
Westmore implies that a scene actually showing the Borg beginning their
assimilation surgery on Picard was shot, but left unused. I've not seen this
anywhere else, and may have misinterpreted Westmore's statement, but it sure
would've left 'em screaming almost as much as they did about "Conspiracy"...
76 BROTHERS
Though Brent Spiner ended up playing the role of Dr. Soong, the producers
had given some thought to handing that part to the late Keye Luke (who also
guest starred in the "Whom Gods Destroy" segment of the original "Star
Trek").
78 REMEMBER ME
Originally intended to be part of the episode "Family," the shipboard story
of people disappearing around a member of the crew would have taken place at
the same time as Picard's visit to Earth, but producer Rick Berman decided
to give each story its own episode, as 45 minutes containing the stories of
both "Family" and "Remember Me" would have been crowded and the resolution
likely would have been too fast.
80 REUNION
Numerous changes were made over the development of this script. Originally,
Alexander was to be K'ehleyr's son by Duras, not Worf, and K'ehleyr was to
have had some sort of relationship with Duras. The story was altered,
making Alexander the son of Worf and removing the Duras relationship. It
was then decided that a better justification was needed for Worf's revenge
on Duras in the final act than his discommendation. Writer Ronald Moore and
Michael Dorn discussed what would make Worf disobey his Starfleet training
to seek vengeance in cold blood, and they arrived at the answer: K'ehleyr
would have to be killed by Duras.
86 DEVIL'S DUE
Another script taken from the planned revival of Classic Trek in the 1970s,
you can pretty much make the same substitutions as noted in "The Child" -
Riker for Decker, Troi for Ilia, and Data for Xon. This script, for reasons
ranging from the difficulty of getting a good story from the concept to
beliefs, went through the hands of at least four writers in the "Star Trek"
offices.
88 FIRST CONTACT
Numerous writers - only a few of whose names appear in the screen credits -
tried to tackle the challenging story of the Federation's first meeting with
a potential new member race, but it proved to be a very difficult premise to
build 42 minutes of television on. Among the concepts considered were a
shuttle-based story and a different version of the planet-based story. In
the shuttle-based story, Picard, Troi and a couple of other officers would be
found by the aliens in an apparently damaged shuttle in orbit of the alien
planet. The "damage" is actually simulated, and the test of whether the
aliens are friendly or not is what treatment they give to a shuttle full of
offworlders. The other story, an earlier draft more closely resembling the
planet-based story, started out with Riker being injured trying to save a
child in the path of a vehicle (as opposed to his being caught in a riot as
in the final draft).
91 IDENTITY CRISIS
In the original script, bought on spec from fan writer Timothy de Haas, two
guest characters were mutating, rather than one guest star and Geordi. In
Cinefantastique magazine, producer Michael Piller also said the first draft
was "heavy on stylistic devices we didn't want to use."
94 THE DRUMHEAD
Originally asked by the head office at Paramount to devise an episode that
would have a very limited budget to make up for some of the fourth season's
more extravagant ventures, producers Michael Piller and Rick Berman resisted
the studio's suggestion of a "clip show" (consisting of a "frame" story and
numerous clips of previous episodes, such as the second season's "Shades of
Gray") and instead set out to produce an episode with a similarly small
budget but with more integrity. Based on a script by Jeri Taylor titled "It
Can't Happen Here," Ronald D. Moore delivered a story on short notice that
used only existing sets and required few, if any, new special effects
sequences (about the only new sequence required being the "explosion" scene
in the engine room).
108 A MATTER OF TIME
The part of Professor Rasmussen was originally written for Robin Williams,
who approached Paramount and said he wanted to guest star in an episode, but
when the time came to shoot this story, Williams had just finished "Hook" and
was getting into another project, and was unable to appear.
114 POWER PLAY
It wasn't until late in this script's development, while the production and
writing teams were struggling with a way to make the episode fill its time
limit without obvious padding, that producer Herb Wright suggested that the
possessed Troi, Data and O'Brien could claim to be ghosts of a dead starship
crew.
115 ETHICS
Several changes and omissions were made in this story. A scene at the
beginning of act one, actually shot, extended from the point where Crusher
informs Worf he is paralyzed. The Klingon tries to will himself to walk, but
collapses to the floor instead, and Crusher's assistants carry him back to
his bed. In another filmed-but-deleted scene at the beginning of the fifth
act, a shot would have opened on Dr. Russell operating on Worf alone, when
the doors open and Dr. Crusher enters, and we find that the "operation" is
actually practice on the holodeck.
118 THE FIRST DUTY
Although her function in the script is unknown, Ashley Judd was reportedly
featured in the original draft of "The First Duty" as Ensign Lefler, with
whom Wesley formed a romance in his earlier fifth season guest appearance in
"The Game." Judd was unavailable for filming, however, and was written out.
120 THE PERFECT MATE
Believe it or not, fans aren't the only ones who occasionally wished for a
different conclusion to this story. FOUR finales were written - two of them
filmed - for the final scene of the wedding ceremony. One of the filmed
endings, of course, was the one broadcast in the episode. The other scenes
included Picard stopping the ceremony and declaring that Kamala was staying
with him; a scene in Picard's imagination which was similar, but ended up
with the "real" ending a la the actual episode; and a scene in which Kamala,
having assimilated the psychological attributes of Picard, declared her own
independence and said she would stay with neither Picard nor Olrig Avolt.
124 INNER LIGHT
According to executive producer Michael Piller, in an interview in
Cinefantastique 23:2/3, seven minutes were cut from the episode to meet with
the standard 43-minute running time, but he did not comment on what those
scenes contained. Writer Peter Allan Fields confirmed this major editing in
ST:TNG Magazine #25.
125 TIME'S ARROW
When the story was being developed, there wasn't a definite time period set
down for Data and the crew to visit. Initially, the concept called for Data
to be time-warped back into present-day Hollywood, which was immediately
dumped. Then other time periods were considered, and at one point there was
even a possibility that there would be a time-travel story involving the
assassination of John F. Kennedy (didn't the season finale of "Quantum Leap"
have Sam leap into the body of Lee Harvey Oswald?...a good chance for a "Next
Generation"/"Quantum Leap" crossover if ever there was one!). Finally, the
late 1800's were picked, along with the appearances of Mark Twain and Jack
London as guest characters.
126 TIME'S ARROW - part two
Some reports say that media reviewers were shown a version of this episode
with a much different ending: an all-out phaser/photon torpedo/other weapons
attack on the planet where the alien hunters were found. The broadcast
version simply shows a brief shot of the Enterprise firing torpedoes.
(Special thanks to Ian Justman and Brian Hall for help with this section, and
again I highly recommend Mark A. Altman's annual Cinefantastique Trek special!)
